Direct Sales – Is it for you?

This week I had an opportunity to talk to a few women about the business opportunity with Thirty One – a step out of my comfort zone.  I know that is a strange statement for someone who is in leadership with a direct sales company, right?  I was blessed with my first recruits who just saw my excitement about my business and wanted to be a party of the journey.  They have become super stars in their own right and are working on growing their own teams.

While talking to a friend, she explained how she got “roped” into possibly signing up with another DS company.  She was supposed to do it with a friend who was now backing out and as a result she wasn’t sure she wanted to do it anymore.  She wants extra income but is not sure what company to sign with which got me to going on a hunt.  In my own way, I shared some of the tips that were on a posting by the Better Business Bureau:

  • Do you have what it takes to be a good salesperson?  I have to admit, on any given day I wonder if I have what it takes to be a “good” salesperson although I am self-motivated and friendly – I would not consider myself outgoing or a good public speaker.  I think this has to do more with passion about the product you are going to sell.  It has to be something you love, use a lot or think you will have a good customer base because all of your friends use the product.  That leads me into the next one…
  • Is this a product you believe in and can sell?  Can you get excited over the product and all the company has to offer?  If you wouldn’t buy the product yourself, you are going to have a hard time selling it.  I started because I wanted the discount, I never BELIEVED that I would have the opportunity to move into leadership.  I LOVE all of the products and use them every day.
  • Can you trust the company?  For me, this was all about the company’s mission, and how they treat their consultants.  There are lots of new DS companies popping up so please make sure you check them out fully.  I fully trust my DS company and am honored to be a part of a company that gives so much back to the community.
  • Do you risk financial loss by joining the company?  The summer months are when many DS companies run sign up specials, extra incentives to join their teams.  What happens once you join?  What are the costs?  How much do you need to sell to stay active?  These are all questions that you need to consider to make an informed decision. My last suggestion is to make a pro and con list of the DS companies that you are interested in that includes: sign-up costs, product price point (is it reasonable for your friends, family & circle), additional monthly costs, minimums to stay active, etc.  Then make your decision.  I would LOVE to grow my team but I have come to learn that our company is not the perfect fit for everyone.  As a leader, I need to LISTEN to what potential recruits are saying (their “why”) so that I can help them with their goals.  Just in case you were wondering – YES, Thirty One is offering an incentive this month, check it out:
