Clear the Clutter, Home Organization

10 Minute Kitchen Clean Up

Do we really believe this????
I would love to have a kitchen that is neat and tiddy, what about you?

We all have our own definition of what “messy” is, right?  For some it is dishes piled in the sink.  While for others it could be counters full of “stuff”.  Honestly, we don’t have much counter space so it doesn’t take long for things to get “messy” in our kitchen.  We have several drawers that look like this…

So, you have a few minutes while you are waiting for breakfast to cook or for someone to get out of the bathroom….why not use it to de-clutter your cook space in a flash.

Okay, are you cringing?  Do you think, I may need these.  I will just hold onto them for a little while.  Now, 5 years later, you still have them.  Guess what, it is time to clean out the clutter.

You can always donate them to a good cause.  I have started a “donate” box in the garage for just this purpose.  Everything that I don’t want or need goes in there.  If I haven’t used it in a year or more, chances are I am not going to use it.  I used to hold things for that “yard sale” but we can’t have them at the condo so why am I holding onto it, right?

I have to be honest, when I sold my house and moved in with hubby 7+ years ago, we never cleaned things out.  Now, I am on a mission to sort, toss and donate.  I remember Belinda saying “if you aren’t tied down or have a purpose, mom is tossing things out – be careful!”

Here is a great easy way to start:

  • Duplicate tools. (You don’t need three whisks or four graters.)
  • Mismatched silverware.
  • Mismatched mugs. (Buy a nice-looking set instead.)
  • Chipped plates.
  • Takeout menus. (They’re all online.)
  • Ketchup and soy sauce packets.
  • Worn-out water bottles.
  • Specialty glassware you keep on the top shelf and never use. (Examples: tiny cordial glasses, heavy beer steins.)
  • Lids without a pot.
  • Kiddie plates that your preteens have grown out of
  • Restaurant takeout containers.

I hope that our “next” house has a kitchen like this with plenty of cabinets to hide things.
