Tips for a Happier Life

Let me start by saying I am NO expert…. I have good days and bad days.  Doesn’t every one?

When I see this picture I always think of the song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”. It seems so basic but how many of us look for happiness – sometimes in the wrong places.  For me, since MS & recovery, being happy means practicing being in the moment.  Not having expectations about things and definitely not trying to fix, manage or control things.

As I was scrolling through my earlier blogs, I was reminded about a post from one of my favorite bloggers, “alwaysthinkingimfat“.  Let me share a few tips to happiness from her with you:

Find light where it was once dark: Are you a half full glass or a half empty glass kind of person?  If you are a half empty kind of person, look for something to focus on.  A small glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.  I know it may be hard to see BUT there is always a glimmer.  It could be the one chance to take yourself from a miserable place to some higher ground.

Reciprocate:  The bottom line is, on life’s journey it is so good to give rather than receive. Take time to notice others and give of yourself.  It will make you feel better and help make the World a better place!  Couldn’t we all use a little kindness these days.

Fuel your creative side:  You put gas in the car but do you ever fuel your creative side.  For years, I let my creative side get buried under the massive lists of  “to dos” and it made for a grumpy Hope.  Okay, so there may have been more to it but it definitely didn’t help.  LOL.  Take a minute right now to jot down some thoughts/ ideas.  Then make a plan to grab the glue gun or get the scrapbooking items out of the closet.  Better yet do it while you are thinking about it – NOW! The moments of elation and self worth will help to promote the positive and downplay the negative.

Active listening: Let’s be honest….are you ALWAYS an active listener or are you guilty of trying to figure out how to respond to what someone is saying.  I will admit it….I have been that person.  I am trying hard to practice active listening.  The truth is when you are not actively listening, you fail to give a person a chance to express themselves or share input as well as ideas. SMACK!  Who is joining me in practicing this???

Face your faults: Being a recovering addict and working a 12-step program has definitely helped in this area of my life.  There was a time in my life when I thought my faults made me less then.  When I hid them for fear someone may not like me.  In general, people tend to be defensive or remiss about their personal faults.  In my life, I am taking steps to say “I am not perfect and I have faults”.  But I can change or make it better, it is up to me.

Delight in success: Too many times, we fail to delight in life’s small successes.  If you lose weight you need to be happy about it and keep going.  Any loss is a loss, so celebrate!  If you set a small manageable goal and obtain it – CELEBRATE it.  Success does not have to be HUGE steps, it can be baby steps towards your goal.  Stop telling yourself you are not successful and become more self assured and confident!  I need to practice what I preach.  LOL!!!

Feed your mind and soul: Take the initiative to inspire, create and reflect.  You feed your body but what about your mind & soul!!  Take a walk to enjoy the beauty outside.  Read a book.  Listen to a podcast.  Do a craft project.  When you fill your cup, you are then able to fill others.  When your cup is empty, you have nothing to give anyone else.

Share your best tips for a happier life.  My best advice is to:

Revel in Being You! Every day is a celebration! It is party time! Get your groove on!

Have an ThirtyOne-derful day!

How to be Happier

Happy Saturday!!!  I am off to another vendor event tomorrow at Ocean County College in the gym.  It is to benefit the OCC Viking Cheerleaders as they prepare to travel to Nationals in about 8 weeks.

OCC 3 9

As I spend the day getting ready, I thought I would share a blog from one of my favorite bloggers, “alwaysthinkingimfat” called “My Tips to Being Happier”

Find light where it was once dark One of the best things to do is look for something to focus on.  It may be a small glimmer of light but it is an opportunity to take yourself from that miserable place to some higher ground
Reciprocate It’s one word but it has such meaning.  In life’s journeys it is so good to give rather than receive.  Take time to notice others and give of yourself.  It will make you feel better and help make the World a better place!
It’s not all about you Really life does revolve around your World  but you are never alone in your struggles.  People share common fears and dilemmas every day. If we decide to stop internalizing these things and deal with them head on it can foster a positive environment and promote success
Fuel your creative side You put gas in the car but do you ever fuel your creative side. People need to take a moment to jot down their thoughts, get the glue gun out or get the scrapbooking items out of the closet. Those moments of elation and self worth help promote the positive and downplay the negative.
Active listening If there was a law against not being an active listener I would be in jail by now. Being guilty of not actively listening means you fail to give a person a chance to express themselves or share input as well as ideas. One goal for this year is to listen to what people are saying and wait to respond until they are finished!!
Do what works for you Last time I checked none of us had owner’s manuals. It’s time to do what works for our lives and remember we are not robots.
Face your faults This is one thing I stink at but I get better with age. People tend to be defensive or remiss about personal faults.  In my life I have taken the steps to say yes I am overweight and obese.  But I can change it or make it better.
Find that happy place It may be a series of moments or possibly a great day. A happy place exists in your life but you need to find it and keep it within your sights
Delight in success Too many times a person fails to delight in life’s small successes.  If you lose weight you need to be happy about it and keep going. Stop telling yourself you are not successful and become more self assured and confident!
Put anger aside We all need a shelf to put things on. For me sometimes it is about the anger I feel at myself and others.  But before you do something you regret or say something you can’t take back put the anger on the shelf and rationally think out your feelings.
Turn off the TV Stop the insanity(Ok I borrowed this line).  You are sitting on the couch with a remote in your hand with a greasy high calorie snack by your side. We all need to unwind but lets be realistic if you sitting all day watching TV you need to find something else to do.
Don’t put yourself on an Island There are no three hour tours here in this lifetime.  If you put yourself on an island and try to hide away from the world you’ll find yourself unhappy and miserable. Open up to the world and try not to feel like you are alone.
Feed your mind and soul Take the initiative to inspire, create and reflect.  You feed your body but what about your mind & soul!!
Always be the better person You want to get back at that person that just made you mad. Forget about it! Always remember the better person takes the higher ground can always look back without fear of what is behind them.
Revel in Being You Every day is a celebration! It is party time! Get your groove on!!

Weight Loss Trip

suitcase4This is a re-blog from alwaysthinkingimfat.  Check out her blog by clicking on her name to see some more about her journey.

We are going to take a weight loss trip.

Our suitcase is ready but we need to iron out some of the details.

1)Purpose of trip

Ask yourself why you are starting out on this journey. Be honest & dig deep inside yourself.

2)Destination

We develop a purpose but then we have to consider where we want to be on this trip. If there is no destination we may be just going around in circles

3)Mode of Transportation

How can we get to our destination? How long will it take to get there? Will we ever get there?

4)Accomodations

If we get there how are we going to stay there and what is the cost for us.

5) Deparature

When do we leave? Is it a place we want to stay for the rest of our lives?

6)Reminder

People say failure is not an option but this is not the case.

We can take another trip or go a different way.

Find new places to stay or leave when we want

If we are not happy maybe its not the right time or place

Maybe the trip needs to be done later

We can’t dwell on the past

Need to live for our future

Look for guidance as we don’t always know the way

Love yourself because the trip is for you

Thank you for this reminder that when we work towards our goal weight, it is journey.  Just like any other trip it has its good days and bad.  Some days it will be fun and we will enjoy the journey.  Some days will be filled with struggles. As you all know, I struggle with reaching my goal weight but it is a journey.  I can’t discount the 108 pounds I have lost nor can I forget that this is all about ME getting healthy and feeling better (inside and out).

What kind of journey are you on today?  It may not be a weight loss journey but apply these principles to whatever journey you are on and the results will be amazing.  Share your journey with us so that we can help each other along the way.

Have a ThirtyOne-derful day!
