Business Tips and Tricks

Are You An Effective Leader?

leaders

Deep down I believe we are all leaders.  Now, for some it may be a little deeper than others.  You know there are people who leading seems to come naturally, right?  Then there are others who struggle with doubt in their abilities to lead.  Which one are you? Or do you fall someplace in the middle.  I will admit, depending on the situation I can fall in either category.

The truth is, the only qualification for being a leader is “you make decisions which influence other people”.  Yup, it is as simple as it comes.  Since we are all leaders, we might as well work on being a great ones, right?

The key to becoming a great leader is not to focus on becoming “a great leader”  but to focus on whether or not you are someone worth following.  This can apply to anywhere you are a leader – our home, your job, your community or in your own business.

Every since Andy Andrews was a speaker at Thirty One’s National Conference, I have been diving into his books and his ideas.  He says there are THREE key qualities of someone who is worth following and they are:

unknown 1. They are truly transparent
This seems to be the new “buzz word” in the business world.  Being transparent means you always take ownership of your mistakes and shortcomings in front of the people you’re leading. You don’t pretend to be perfect and you admit when you’re wrong.  I am definitely transparent!

A truly good leader will also know the difference between a mistake and a bad choice.  Do you know the difference?  A mistake is something accidentally done, but with good intentions. A bad choice is something purposely done.  I tend to make more mistakes than I do bad choices although when it came to my addictions I would have to say it was more bad choices.

Knowing how to handle the consequences of both by being transparent builds your followers’ loyalty.  When people understand your thinking and see you are human, they will want to follow you.

images   2. They know how to get back on track
Leaders along with their followers make mistakes and poor choices.  A great leader will know how to get not only themselves but also their followers back on track when they are negatively affected by a mistake or bad choice.

Leaders can shift perspective back to the big picture when things go wrong.  Leaders remain calm in the face of confusion and crisis.  When we are transparent, followers feel safe coming to us with their own mistakes and bad choices.

6a00e54f8c25c9883401157249b1b2970b3. They take advantage of teachable moments.
To remain a leader and help people grow, great leaders take advantage of opportunities to teach.  Don’t we do this as parents?

How many times have we let our “bad mood” handle a situation inappropriately?  The end result is not good and usually leads to a screaming match, right?  How often have you used a moment like this to be transparent with your kids.

As a single mom who was a recovering addict, I needed to acknowledge my bad choices and ask forgiveness.  If it was just a mistake, a simple apology worked to make things right.  If I made a bad choice, I didn’t wait to be transparent.  I easily shared what was happening with me and the fact it was no excuse for how inappropriately I had acted. I will admit, many thought I shared way too much with my young daughter BUT it always strengthened our relationship. The valuable teaching moments rarely occured at convenient times.  So, it meant stopping what I was doing, checking my emotions, and taking a sharp detour. Great leaders seize teachable moments, whether they’re inconvenient and uncomfortable.

It is easy to focus  on ourselves when we think about effective leadership but it can be overwhelming at time.  So, shy not shift from a “ME” perspective to an outward focus.

Ask yourself:

  • Who stands to gain from my improved leadership?
  • How will my leadership help those following me?
  • How would a steady, calm presence of leadership make those around me become more effective?

Picture those people in your mind—your family members, your co-workers, your employees, or whomever else you might be leading. They will give you all the motivation you need to become someone worth following.

Who do you follow?  Picture one of those leaders from your own life, right now.  What did they do to make you want to follow them?

Have a ThirtyOne-derful day!

A Scrapbook of the Future

13692609_10208957067621159_196053223836297888_n

I have just come home from an AMAZING Thirty One National Conference.  This is just a “few” of the friends that I got to hang out with on The Beacon of Hope team.  I am reflecting on all that I heard and realize that this was life changing in so many ways for me.

13726574_10208957067301151_2459943727636367299_n

This year’s theme was “What Matters Most?”.  If you were asked that question, how would you answer it.  Would you say: Family, Faith, Friends, kids, work, travel, or giving back?  For me, it is faith, family and friends.  But I realized that if I looked at where I spend most of my time, it was definitely NOT in that order OR on those 3 things.

What about you…. do you spend your time on the things that matter most to you?  Are you juggling lots of balls (tasks)?  At the end of the day, is your energy drained and you have nothing to give to the things that matter most?  I have been there.  I know what that is like. I actually thought that when I left my crazy full-time job things would be different.  I would have time for the 3 things that matter most to me.  WOW!  Was this weekend an eye opener when I realized that I was so far from where I wanted to be.

images-1

I know that many of you have heard of vision boards and if you are like me, maybe you have been unsure what to put there.  Maybe you have even avoided them.  Maybe you put the things on there that you “thought” should be there.  Maybe your fears have kept you from dreaming BIG.  Sound familiar?  Maybe those Pinterest boards or Instagram pictures have you comparing your dreams to that of others.

maxresdefault

Let’s change the picture (actually, the mind set).  How many of you have made scrapbooks of your kids, family vacations, life accomplishments, etc?  Things that have happened in the past that we want to cherish their memory, right?  What if you were to do a scrapbook of the future?  I can see the eyes roll as well as the doubts and negativity creeping in.  HOLD ON!!!  Let’s break it down into 4 sections:

  • Relationships
  • Business
  • Finances
  • Kids

What if you were to visualize (DREAM) where you want to be in each of these areas?  Set aside about 30 minutes for each one and start making notes or flipping through magazines for ideas.  Focus on one at a time.

Relationships: Not in a relationship, do you long for one?  If so, what would that person be like?  What qualities would he/she possess?  Are you in a relationship, do you want to get married?  Are you married, what kind of relationship do you want with your spouse?  Is your relationship having some rough spots, what would you like to have happen?

9dcff5f7069e43efbcb6cf0a4c5d0ae3

Business:  Do you have your own business (or would you like one)?  Do you have a career – what is your goal, where do you want to grow?  If you want your own business, why is it important to you?  What would it look like?

enrollment-kit-page-0

Finances:  Are you in debt and want to pay it off?  Do you want to own a house? What would it look like?  Do you want money to travel? Travel to where?  Do you want to make a difference in the lives of others – what would that look like?

Kids:  Do you have them or do you want them?  What would you like their life to look like growing up?

For some this may seem like a silly exercise BUT did you know that if you HEART wants it your HEAD will get you there.  It is true!  Your current circumstances DO NOT control your dreams.  Your dreams are YOUR DREAMS!  They are not anyone else’s.  Others may think they are silly.  Who cares?  They are YOUR DREAMS!  You need to BELIEVE that all things are possible.

Im Possible

I challenge you to make your own scrapbook of the FUTURE!  Share it with us.  I am headed out to find some magazines because we don’t get any at the house.  I am read to get my scrapbook together so my head will start heading to where my heart wants to be.

Have a ThirtyOne-derful day!

Throwback Thursday – Celebrate the Ones You Love

1a3367beccad4edf8f38ac5272de8c30

Since I am still floating in my pink bubble, I decided to do a “Throwback Thursday” post which seemed so appropriate.  This is from July 21, 2013 – the first year I started blogging. Funny that this is about preparing to go to National Conference and this year, I am recouping after being away.

Sunday is my time to reflect, relax and recharge. Every morning I get several emails on daily devotions – I know why do I need some many, right? I find that each one touches me in a way the others couldn’t when I am struggling. As I head off to church this morning, my mind is racing with the TO DO list for the next two days as I prepare to leave for HOTLANTA on Wednesday. In all of the busyness, there is one message that stuck out for me – a “Message from God” that is short, sweet and to the point.

Today, Hope, we believe God wants you to know that … you cannot let this day pass without telling the people you love that you love them. Do not take for granted the people closest to your heart. Nothing is permanent, celebrate them now.

Life gets in the way for all of us – We forget to call family and friends thinking we will get to it later. We forget to send that email to let someone know we are thinking of them. We miss sending a birthday card and then figure if it is late, why bother. Errands, work, the mom taxi, doctors appointments, etc all keep us busy. Then something stops you in your tracks – a call about a friend who is sick, a family member in the hospital, a posting on Facebook that a fellow classmate has died too soon. SMACK! The reality hits that time has slipped by – days, weeks, months and you have lost touch with those you love or who are the closest to your heart.

7d3a8d752fc8495abc15d219a7cd3a52

Take time today to pause for a moment – make that phone call, send that email, mail a card just to say I was thinking about you. CELEBRATE the people in your life that are closest to your heart. Don’t let the miles, however large or small, get in the way of letting them know you care.

Today, I will CELEBRATE – ENCOURAGE – REWARD those in my life who are the closest to my heart. How about you? Have a ThirtyOne-derful day.

How to Vacation and Leave Work Behind

boss-detox-cover-photo

It is Monday morning and I am still in my pink bubble…..Today is the last day of National Conference.  Have I left work behind while I am here?  Honestly, no because I don’t consider my own business as work BUT I have left behind the JOB!  I can also look like I am on vacation every day because I can take my office to the beach, the coffee shop or to a hotel.

Being away, I get to observe people which is something that I love to do.  Why do people insist on working when they are supposed to be taking downtime?  Did you know that more than half of Americans work on vacation!

Here are some tips so that you can leave your work at home on your next vacation:

1. Plan Ahead

planner pic

We make a plan when we go on vacation, right?  Why not plan to get work done early too?  Take a look at the work that is due while you are away or as soon as you get back.  Put in a few extra house now so that you can reduce your to-dos while you’re away. Wouldn’t your boss love it if you finished a project early? It is possible to finish projects early, just change the mindset.

2. Talk to Your Clients (Your Customers)

When you work for someone else, it is easy to let people know that you will be on vacation and who will be covering for you, right?  When you are a solo-preneur, it may be a little different.  Let your customers, know in advance that you will be taking time off.  Let them know if you will have limited access to social media, email, etc.  I don’t think I have ever heard of anyone being upset that you took a vacation.  Are you a home party consultant, let hostesses know that you need to close parties out before your leave or it won’t happen until after you get back.  Yes, I am the crazy one who worked on closing 7 parties prior to leaving for National Conference.

3. Leave Your Technology Behind

no-tech-graphic

Yes, I said it!  I already can here the million excuses about why you can’t leave it behind.  Okay, you’re allowed to bring your phone, so that you can be available for emergencies. The rest stays in the office. Oh and take the notifications off your phone for email, social media, etc.  I mean do we really need a computer and a tablet with the cell phones that are out today.  It is way too easy to take a quick peek at your work email and then end up 5 hours later not sure where your vacation day went.  You’d be surprised how refreshing a few days without Internet access can real be.  You will feel rested and ready to fully focus on your business when you return.

4. Focus on Your Family

9dcff5f7069e43efbcb6cf0a4c5d0ae3

Remember your objective: to reconnect with the people you don’t get to see when you’re working. To that end, plan activities to really maximize your time together.

A vacation is meant to provide rest and relaxation, stay focused on your mission!

Have a ThirtyOne-derful day!
