Weekend Plan


TGIF!!!!  For some it will mean spending time with family and friends NOT working.  For others, like me, I work on the weekends at my part-time job.  For many it means two days full of running errands, sporting events, getting housework done and running the kids.  No matter what you are doing this weekend, remember what we talked about this week – meeting NEW people will expand our customer base.

Why not have a plan this weekend to continue all of the things that we talked about during the week.  I hear that  groan!  You are thinking “I don’t have time”, right?  The truth is some of the strongest relationships are already being built in the places that you spend the most time.

Do you go to the same grocery store all of the time?  Maybe even have the same cashier?  Have you complimented her on something?  Have you shared your business?

Do you make regular stops every week?  Maybe it is the pharmacy or the cleaners or WaWa.  Think about the people that you run into every week at those locations – you are building relationships.

Are you a walking billboard as you drive the kids to their activities?  The Spirit collection with Thirty One is the PERFECT way to tell people about your business.  We always need drinks and snacks – use a thermal with your child’s name, sport icon or team name on it.  I wish had our large utility totes when Belinda was going to cheering competitions.  Life would have been so much easier.  Yes, she carried the basics in her cheer bag but Mom always got everything else – coats, extra water, snacks, blanket, extra clothes… you get the picture.  I think our Spirit collection is a must have for every parent with a child in sports or group activities.

I have a plan for tonight and tomorrow night, I will be at Taylor Sam’s in Brick for a “catalog & coffee” event.  As I have said many times, my favorite lunch spot is now going to be serving dinner on Friday and Saturday nights.  I LOVE that I will not have to worry about planning a meal on those nights when it is just me for dinner – I can just go there and eat.  I know that many of their regular customers will be there to support their efforts.  I will have kid packets (coloring sheets, crayons & stickers along with a mini catalog) to keep the kids busy while they are waiting for their meal.  I will build my relationships with those regular customers that I see during the day.

After I eat, I invited friends to stop by with a two-fold purpose: to check out the dinner menu AND to pick up a NEW Spring catalog.  My first goal is to spread the word about Taylor Sam’s – NO, I am not part owner but I have been called the Mayor!  LOL.  By helping them to  increase their business, I will have an opportunity to share my business with lots of new potential customers.  A win-win for everyone.

Do you have a favorite restaurant that you go to ALL of the time?  How about placing a lead box there?  How about inviting friends for coffee and just hang out for an hour – a chance for some girl time?

As you set-out this weekend, have a plan.  Make sure that you have business cards and mini catalogs with you to share.  Make sure you take a minute to compliment the cashier, a person in  line or the woman who looks like she is struggling to keep it together.  That simple gesture may be the one thing that saves their life and puts a smile on their face.  Building relationships is about connecting with people.

Searching For Customers


The first week of the new year and how does YOUR calendar look?  Is it where you want it to be for the month of January or is it lacking in parties and potential sales?  I have to admit that mine is not where I would like it to be so I am taking steps necessary to make some changes.

There are two major components to a thriving business:

  1. Happy and loyal customers that come back, and
  2. A steady stream of new customers.

I am blessed to have happy and loyal customers who come back but I am always afraid of burning them out so I am always on the prowl for new customers.  The new year is full of new beginnings and the chance to build new relationships with new circles – YES, I mean stepping out of your comfort zone.

Before you get ready to expand your circle, make sure that you are providing consistent excellent service to your current customers.  Make sure that when someone mentions Thirty One (or your product) that YOUR customers gladly share you name.  It makes me sad when I talk to people who are carrying Thirty One and they say they don’t know the name of their consultant.  I always cringe in the hopes that it is not one of my customers who I have lost touch with over the last few years.

Now, you are ready for the next step – finding NEW customers.  Where do you find them?  If you have kids, I think it is so much easier because most kids are involved in lots of activities.  As long as you are using your product (free advertising) you will gain new customers.  For those of us whose children are grown or may be single, it could be more of a challenge.

So, you need to go where the people are, here are some ideas:

  • Join an association/club/organization
  • Take a community-sponsored class or course
  • Present a workshop or be a speaker
  • Get a hobby and join others with the same interests
  • Get involved with a charity or cause
  • Go to a networking event
  • Go onto social media networks, engage and find old/new friends
  • Promote and sponsor a community activity/event of your own
  • Start a book, breakfast, coffee, coupon, or arts & crafts club
  • Network with other businesses and business people in your community
  • Become a connector/referrer for others, and become a go-to person
  • Start a referral rewards program with existing clients
  • Use local advertising and marketing

I am stepping out of my comfort zone a little bit further this year.  I am going to focus on THREE areas for this year:

  1. Get involved with a charity or cause;
  2. Become a connector/referrer for others, and become a go-to person and
  3. Increase my presence in social media networks to engage and find old/new friends.

Those that know me are probably thinking that this isn’t really out of my comfort zone since I used to do 1 and 2 all of the time.  The truth is that when I retired from Social Services about three years ago, I never really got connected with a charity or cause in Central Jersey.  A lot of touched my heart and I have helped many different groups but I haven’t connected with the ONE.  I am becoming a connector now that I moved but I want to set that as a goal for this year.

Now that you figured out where you are going to get new customers, how are you going to interact WITHOUT selling or “puking” up your business?  Here are some ideas:

  • Be curious and learn to enjoy meeting people
  • Ask questions and improve your listening skills
  • Be positive and inviting
  • Be professional and authentic
  • Don’t be a salesman, but be friendly and social
  • Become a “let’s have coffee” person and meet face to face with people
  • Be a social and party person
  • Have all the possible ways to contact you on your business card
  • Start using and writing notes on your business card to hand to people you meet
  • Make yourself memorable, but not over the top. Make your first impression a lasting one
  • Convey passion in what you do

It’s all about the numbers.  Quality customers will only come if you meet enough people. Adding new customers can be as easy as taking baby steps – make it a goal to talk or to connect with at least 3 new people every day.  That can be as simple as chatting with someone when you are line at the store, commenting on someone’s bag (outfit, etc) or messaging someone on social media about something that they posted to connect with them.
