Holiday Road Trip Survival Guide

This week starts one of the busiest travel period of the year…

Why this week?  In NJ, it is teacher’s convention add to that Election Day  and it makes for a week (or almost a week) off from school for the kids.  Next up is Thanksgiving then Christmas.

What about the weekend trips to see the leaves change?  This is what I think about hitting the road…. So, whether you’re going away for a long weekend or just a day, road trips can definitely add to the holiday joy – and stress. But from packing to snacking, Thirty-One has some helpful tips that will have you looking forward to the journey as much as the destination!

Savvy packing

My husband always jokes about the packing skills.  I can fit LOTS of stuff into a small space and still see out the back window.  It comes from all of the trips to cheering competitions and craft shows.  Organized packing can mean fewer bags, and fewer bags means more room to stretch your legs on the long car ride! For your clothes and other essentials, load up a couple of All Packed Duffles or Fold-Over Weekenders. These travel bags are just the right size for holidays away, and their soft edges mean you can squeeze several into your trunk more easily than boxy suitcases.

Blankets and pillows are road trip essentials, whether they’re for napping on the way to your destination or extra bedding once you get there. Instead of letting your backseat become a sea of blankets, fold and store bedding in a Large Utility Tote (LUT) in your trunk so it’ll be easy to access during pit stops. You’ll be all set to snuggle up by the fire with family and friends, and LUTs are also great for keeping all of those carefully wrapped gifts safe and sound!

Packing toiletries for travel is always tricky, but the Fold Up Family Organizer is a great option to store all your bottles and brushes. The clear zipper pockets make it easy to see what’s where without products falling out during the drive.

Smart snacking

Packing snacks can help you save money and time on the road. Juice boxes, string cheese sticks and fruit like grapes or apple slices are all easy, no-mess snacks for kids and adults alike, and they fit perfectly in the Fresh Market Thermal. This cooler keeps all your food and drinks secure during long road trips and then folds up nicely once its empty, giving you even more leg room. Or, load it up with holiday leftovers for the trip home!

Holiday gatherings usually mean food and lots of it. Whether you’ve whipped up a tasty casserole or some decadent desserts, bring something special to the table with our Perfect Party Set. Just the right size to tuck securely under a seat, this cooler helps you transport all your hard holiday work safely to the table.

Activity tracking

Nothing makes time fly like keeping yourself occupied during a road trip. If you’re looking for some inspiration to help pass the time while travelling, try out these ideas:

  • Audio books or podcasts are a great option if passengers have differing music tastes, and they still let the driver be involved! Download a couple of funny podcast episodes or holiday-themed books before your trip to switch things up from the radio.
  • Plan fun pit stops. If you’re going to be spending hours in the car, map out some fun stopping points that will give you an excuse to get out and stretch your legs. Check online before you depart to see if there are any monuments, bakeries or nature sites along your route.
  • Journal challenges: Get the kids’ creative juices flowing! Give each passenger a Journal Trio journal and some pencils. Throughout the trip, call out challenges like “draw a picture of Grandma’s house” or “make up a story about what Santa does the day after Christmas.” It’s fun for kids to share what they’ve come up with, but it’s also fun for you to think up the challenges!
Fashion hacking

A long car ride in your most stylish holiday outfit? After a few miles, those scratchy sequins might make you wish you had opted for sweats. Instead, travel fashionably (and comfortably) by taking your basics and dressing them up with JK by Thirty-One jewelry! Add a little sparkle to a plain sweater with the bold Fringed & Fabulous Necklace or a dainty pair of Gallery Earrings. You’ll feel comfortable and ready to celebrate as soon as you roll up to that holiday party.

Keeping your jewelry secure and organized while travelling can save lots of time, headaches and untangling in the long run. Jewelry organizers like the Baubles & Bracelets Case are perfect for separating delicate chains from dangling earrings so that you can have yourself a stylish little holiday.

When you’re taking a holiday road trip, every item needs to pull double duty, and that includes your handbag! Travel in style with classics like the Organizing Shoulder Bag or the new Colorblock Tote. These fashionable additions complete any outfit, and no one needs to know that you’ve tucked extra socks or toiletries inside!

How To Find the Perfect Sunglasses

In your search for the perfect sunglasses, the first thing to ask yourself is “What shape is my face?” Faces come in all different shapes and sizes, and not all sunglasses work with every type of face. Do you have a pronounced chin? An angular jawline? Small, delicate features? Yep, sunglasses were made to help you see, but they were also made to be seen in. Make sure you’re in the style that helps you look your best! (Hint: It’s all about balance!)

Round Face? Avoid circular frames! Angles are better.

If the width of your face is about the same length as its height, then you have a round face. People with round faces tend to have softer, less dramatic features, so they need frames that add angles and definition. Square frames like wayfarers are a good choice, while round shapes should be avoided. Anything which actually mimics the shape of a round face only makes it look even rounder.

Square face? Balance out angular features for a softer look.

Faces considered to be square have strong angles, such as defined jawlines and chins. These types of faces benefit from sunglass shapes which are rounder and softer. Additionally, if you have a large face, you should wear large glasses extending beyond the widest part of your face. This helps with overall proportion.

Heart-shaped face? Tapered frames are the way to go!

If you have a face wider at the top but tapers to a more angular chin, it’s considered to be heart-shaped. Unlike people who have round or square faces, those with heart-shaped faces want to mimic their features in a pair of sunglasses. Frames are typically wider at the top but curve into a narrower teardrop shape tend to look best on heart-shaped faces. Aviators are a good example of this style.

Oval face? Try them all, but keep it in proportion!

If you have an oval face, consider yourself a lucky girl. Oval faces have a great blend of features – not too round, not too square, not too heart-shaped. Any sunglass frame shape can work on you, as long as it isn’t too wide for your face or too big for delicate features. Ideally, the perfect pair of sunglasses will be the same width as your face. If they are wider, they will look out of proportion. The same goes for oval faces with small, fine features. If you have delicate features, frames that are big and chunky will overwhelm your face.

Once you’ve selected the perfect pair of sunglasses, you’ll need a nice carrying case, too! Our Pinch-Top Eyeglass Case has an exterior zipper pocket, a padded interior compartment for safe keeping and a D-ring attachment for a wristlet strap (sold separately). It’s sized to hold your glasses, keys, cell phone and more. Tuck it away inside your favorite Thirty-One purse!

Travel Tips

Let’s Get Ready to Travel

In my other life, I worked for a Hotel Reservation Center where I spent ALOT of time traveling.  Sometimes it was a long trip for a conference to share about our services and other times it was quick jaunts to different cities for a travel agent tour.  I miss the days of hopping on a plane and just going.  Belinda got to do a lot of traveling before the age of 2 for this reason.  Whether you travel for work or are planning a vacation, here are a few tips to make your trips a lot less stressful.

Pack less

I know this sounds like a no-brainer but the truth is, most of us pack more than we will ever need.  We always used to take “just in case” clothes.  Just in case could mean anything so you know there was way too many clothes.

Getting ready to pack?  Take everything you think you’re going to need for your trip out of your closet, NOW halve it. I know it is scary!  But it’s what you should pack. Yes, it’s good to be prepared for different weather and all, but think about it, do you really need six jerseys and five pairs of shoes?  The lighter you pack, the easier your trip will be.  Also, invest in either a distinctive suitcase so you can easily identify it at baggage claim or have something to distinguish yours from others.

Keep it compact

I am one of those who likes to travel with my laptop.  Why?  Security, I guess.  What if I need something from my computer?  Crazy, right?  Well, I have uncomplicated my life by using an envelope bag (a VERY old Thirty One product which might make a comeback) or to carry my laptop, and laptop charger.  Sometimes I use my Thirty One Cindy Tote because it will hold my laptop along with my book and my Organizing Shoulder Bag.

Valet services

I have never done this since friends and family have always helped with dropping off and picking up at the airport.  Find out about the valet parking service available at the airport so you don’t struggle with parking, especially if you’re running late. With a valet service, you just drop your car off at the drop-off zone and someone from the service drives your car to the secure parking lot. When you return they’ll be waiting for you with your car right where you left it.

Travel with a hoodie

The benefits of travelling with a hoodie are countless, especially on a long flight. First of all hoodies are super comfortable and they make great ‘cushions’ when you want to sleep. Thanks to the hood, you’re also able to shut out the chatterbox stranger you always seem to find yourself sitting next to by simply putting it on and facing the window.  I never thought of this benefit – I travel with it because I am always cold.  LOL.

Jiggle-a-bit

Just because you’re a regular flyer doesn’t mean you like flying, right? And it’s easy to assume the worst part of any flight is turbulence for any person with the slightest aviophobia (the fear of flying). Believe it or not, jiggling around slightly during turbulence counteracts (to some degree) the bumpiness, making it a bit more manageable.

My next flight isn’t until September for the Leadership Incentive trip BUT I will definitely need to think about some of these.  What are your best tips for air travel?  Share them with us.

Purse-onality

purse personality

Happy Saturday!  I am still in North Carolina with hubby visiting our daughter so if you are reading this it simply means that I didn’t have time to blog.  I mean blog this morning as I wrote this before we left just in case….

We are heading for Ringling Brothers Circus in Asheville today with Belinda and her roommate, Ashley.  See we are recreating the total trip that was planned last year.  I don’t remember going to the circus when Belinda was little – don’t get me wrong, she went but with other family members.  I on the other hand remember going to the circus for my birthday in NY while I was growing up.  Every year I looked forward to that trip that included dinner in the CITY!

Okay, so what does that have to do the “purse-onality”?  Nothing really!  Although I changed my bag several times before leaving for the trip to ensure that I had the right one.  One side of me wanted to take them all so that I could change for every occasion but I knew that would make hubby crazy.  So I went with my go to bag – retro metro bag (bottom left corner).  Big pockets and lots of space to carry things in.  Of course I will have other Thirty One bags in the car, just in case we do some shopping or need to pack anything up to come home.

What is YOUR favorite bag?  Here are the names starting at the top row from left to right:  Cindy Tote, Inside Out bag, Vary You Backpack, Retro Metro Foldover, Explorista Crossbody, Vary You Mini Crossbody, Retro Meto Bag, Organizing Shoulder Bag and the Suite Success Tote.  We have something for every occasion and to fit your style.
