What Do You Really Want?

984280_844664702258370_4772461903247074864_n

I love seeing the different things that Thirty One carried in their earlier catalogs.  Yes, we sold bird feeders.  #tbt

An article by Team Conections resonated with me as I transform my business this year (Thirty One’s year) to a heart to heart business.  The title of the article was “What do you Really, Really Want?”.  How many of you are humming the Spice Girl’s song?  Be honest!

I always wonder where I have failed as a leader when my team’s performance is inconsistent.  As a Leader, my goals not only depend on me but also on the performance of my team.  This is true in most direct sales companies.  As consultant, we achieve a level of success based on our own merits.  When we move into leadership, our success is not only measured by our personal success but also on how well we encourage, motivate and inspire our teams to follow our lead.

Here are the 3 steps that were suggested to figure out what you REALLY, REALLY want (yes, I am still humming!).

Step One: You, the Leader

What do you really, really want? What are you willing to do to achieve it? Each goal-setting season begins with some soul searching. It is helpful to get away and spend some quiet time writing the answers to these questions:

  • What do I want for my family?
  • What do I want for myself?
  • What do I want my team to achieve?
  • What am I willing to do to achieve these goals?
  • What must I sacrifice to make them happen?
  • Who must I get involved?
  • Who needs to know my goals to support me in their success?
  • Is my team in place to realistically achieve these goals?

Step Two: Your Team Members

What does each team member really, really want?  What is he or she willing to do to achieve it? Find out by talking to each of them! Ask them the questions that you have pondered yourself.  Building relationships is the key and one I have struggled with over the years.  Pretty funny since as a retired Social Worker that was what I did every day.  Yet, somehow I have a hard time translating those skills to my personal life and to my own business.  It is now time to explore with your team and help them match up what they want with what they are willing to do.

Step Three: Match the Goals of the Leader to the Goals of the Team

Once you have an understanding of what your team wants and what they are ready and willing to do to accomplish their goals, you can realistically set your own goals.Take some time to put numbers to your team’s goals. What does each of their individual efforts add up to? How many are looking to promote? What are their sales and recruiting goals? If each one achieves their goal, what does that mean to you? Once you have added up the results of what will happen if each of your team members meets their personal goals, take a good look at how it matches up with your own goals.

If things line up, it’s time to support your team in achieving their dreams as you follow through on your personal goals. If they don’t, what must you do to fill in the gap? Will you recruit more to find that next leader? Sell more to make up the team sales goal? Invite more people into your leadership promotion system? Perhaps you will adjust your goals to line up with the team. Maybe their dreams are bigger than you expected and it’s time to stretch your goals higher!

Do you really, really know who wants to be one of your new leaders this fall?  These three steps may be what you need to get started.  One of the most important keys for having a successful team is promoting new leaders.  You want to find and support those who want to grow a business just like yours.  Promoting new leaders starts with you!

So, what do you really, really want?  Share your thoughts with us.

Have a ThirtyOne-derful day!

Chasing Rabbits

Rabbits

“You cannot chase more than one rabbit at a time and catch either one of them.”  Mary Kay Ash, cosmetics mogul

This is a busy week for those in the Thirty One pink bubble as well as other direct sales companies that are launching a new catalog on August 1st.  It is the end of the month and the end of the season.  It is a week of transition between old and new catalogs.  It is making sure that your customers don’t miss out on their favorite retiring products.  It is getting your hostess packets and marketing materials ready to ensure that you have a full calendar for the next few months. WOW!  I am tired just thinking about it.  Actually my list is getting longer by the minute of things to get done.  What about you?

One of my biggest mistakes and maybe yours too, is that I try this idea, that idea, that website, and this coach. We want to try all of these things at the same time and see what works.  We are running around trying what everyone else is doing instead of looking at our own business and evaluating what worked and what didn’t work for us.

Change can be good, sometimes.  Just imagine a potential recruit.  Maybe she has been to a few of your parties.  You think she would be great on your team.  As you talk to her, you hear “I couldn’t do that”, “you are so (fill in the blank) and that isn’t me” or “I don’t have time to change things up all of the time”.  The truth is change can be good if it is for the right reasons but just for the sake of changing could hurt more than help. You may have just made your job look so hard that no one wants to do it.

Been there, done that and lost the recruit.  I have tried every party idea that came along because it sounded fun or because it increased XX business, so it will help mine.  The truth is our circle of customers can be very different.

I am kicking off the new catalog by going old school. What does that mean?  I am SERVING my customers and hostesses.  I had some of my best parties when I wasn’t “trying” too hard.  When I focused my hostess coaching to boost her excitement.  When I asked what kinds of things her guest would like – not just products but the party experience.  It wasn’t my agenda but it fit into what they wanted to do for the night.  My basic script was always the same. Some may say boring, others would say it was a good thing.

You know what is happening?  My hostess coaching is getting better.  I am building better relationships with my hostesses which will lead to a better relationship with her guests.  I am focused on the best products to present instead of what game to play or what I am going to say,  KISS – Keep It Simple Sister!

What have I learned over the last year?  Sales were down slightly. Parties were down. Why? I could blame it on the economy.  I could blame it on the “s” word. But when I get gut honest, it is the way that I ran my business.  I was so busy trying the latest party idea that I missed out on building a good relationship with my customers, hostesses and team.  I looked unsure, and possibly even insincere because it wasn’t me!  Love this statement by Carrie Wilkerson

You don’t want your baby delivered by the Dentist. You want a specialist. I could not have chased all those rabbits and done as well as I did.

Trust me – focus on one model that works for you. I am not saying that you can’t change it up once in a while BUT keep the basic format the same.  I love the simplicity of Thirty One’s WOW format – Welcome, Offer Solutions, Wrap Up.  We want our job to look as easy as it is.  We want people to climb on board as hostesses and team.

Do you get distracted in your business when you see LOTS of ideas flying around?

Have a ThirtyOne-derful day!

Business Marketing

better together

It is Friday and for many of my Thirty One sisters, they are headed to National Conference in Columbus Ohio.  This is  my favorite time of year for so many reasons but the BIGGEST one is that as Thirty One sisters, we are better together.  Together we celebrate our achievements.  Together we encourage each other through the hills and the valleys of our business.  Together we reward each other with hugs and high fives.  Although I have always been a team player, working solo (especially in my grant writing days) seemed to be my favorite mode of working – that is so different now.  I thrive when I am surrounded by the love and support of my Thirty One sisters.  I will be with you in spirit this year as I celebrate, encourage and reward you from a distance.

I started thinking about some other things that are better together like peanut butter & jelly, wine & cheese and sugar & spice.  Then I start thinking about the different ways that we can market our business.  I know a strange transition but it happens that way some times.

For many in direct sales, we have lean business budgets because our goal was to make money when we joined NOT spend it right?  But we need to keep ourselves front and center with our potential customers.  What makes them think of YOU when they are ready to buy?  Is it that they carry your products or use them on a daily basis?

Here are some inexpensive ways to advertise your business when you are out and about:

1. iPad, iPhone or laptop “skin”

I think this is a great idea.  I am always either on my iPhone or my iPad.  My phone currently has a plain cover and doesn’t tell anyone what I do.  My iPad is the same.  I am going to create a skin for my iPad and cell phone, so no one will miss a chance to know what I do.  I mean I usually wear a Thirty One shirt and I ALWAYS am carrying a Thirty One bag but by using my visual brand, what a great conversation starter!

2. Social media

Everyone is on social media – all or some but at least one if they are in business.  There is Facebook, Twitter and YouTube which offer space to say who you are and what you do. Then there is Periscope and LinkedIn.  Personally, why not use these platforms as an opportunity to remind your friends and family what you offer?  How about using business images or sayings on your profile headers, add photos of you at work (everyone loves a party), your company logo or a recent company training, instead of a photo of your dog or a pretty sunset.  I think personal things are important too but there should be a 80/20 split on your personal page.  Remember sharing is caring.

3. Social events

Step out of your comfort zone which can mean getting out of your current networking circles. Scary, right?  Find new events where media and decision-makers are mingling which might earn you some free publicity.  Get involved with causes that are near and dear to your hear.

4. Video

This is becoming something that I am more comfortable with the more I do them.  Practice makes perfect, right?  The use of video is growing every minute.  Make them short and to the point.  Think about the videos that you watch and what makes you click them or not.  Have real world videos like your team at work and play, highlight product demonstration or give virtual tours of your office.  Things that would let people get to know you and your company product.  I am doing videos on my Facebook parties and getting a lot of positive feedback.  Thank you to the Tag Team Peeps for their ideas.

In the past, it was sell, sell, sell.  Today, it is more about positioning yourself so that customers think of you when opportunities arise.  What is your best tip for sharing instead of selling?

Have  ThirtyOne-derful day!
